Hello! I am Sarah Watte. If you walk into our
booth, many of the pieces you will see are mine. I have
been interested in art my whole life. But, I never really
put much work in our booth until I started taking some
gourd workshops when I was 12. Ever since then, I
have always had work in our booth, in art shows, even
in a gallery.
I work with many different methods, but mainly
gourds.The types of gourd-art I do include the following:
Wood burning
Spirit Dolls
Wax resist
Dream catcher weaving
Bead application over wax
Painting
Basketry
Metal inlay
Sculpture
and much, much more!!!
I am also working with ceramics right now, and
have taken a class on the subject. I hope to have some
examples of that on my page in the future. I am
planning to take some classes on glass fusing and/or
glass bead making, and classes on Raku firing for
pottery. I recently took a class on painting horses on
gourds, so there will also be some horses appearing in
my future work.
I mainly do spirit dolls, which I learned in one of
the first classes I ever took. These are made by
attaching a small gourd "head" to a section of a snake
gourd, the "body". I then wood burn and paint it,
adding a base, feathers, and a necklace. I am also
breaking into beading gourds. This I do by applying
wax to a gourd, then covering it with designs in seed
beads (see example "Beaded Gourd" picture on page). I
have done very few pieces using this style, for it is very
time consuming, yet I will be doing much more in this
style in the future. I apply each bead, by hand, using
only wax and a toothpick. Come into our booth and see!
